Full Description:

                                          The Faces of Diabetes.....

Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association is the only organization funding innovative research, education and advocacy for all people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. Type 1 diabetes accounts for 5% to 10% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. This form of diabetes usually strikes children and young adults, although disease onset can occur at any age.
To survive, people with type 1 diabetes must have insulin
delivered by injection or a pump.

Type 2 diabetes is associated with older age, obesity, family
history of diabetes, history of gestational diabetes, impaired glucose metabolism, physical inactivity, and race/ethnicity.
Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90% to 95% of all diagnosed cases of diabetes. Doctors are now reporting type 2 diabetes at epidemic rates among our children, Diabetes can lead to serious complications and premature death, but people with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and lower the risk of complications.

Diabetes is a chronic disease that has no cure. It is also the fifth-deadliest disease in the U.S. There are an estimated 20.8 million people in the United States; although about one third them are unaware they have the disease.  Diabetes has increased 61 % in Americans since 1990 and 1 in 3 Americans born in 2000 will
develop diabetes in their lifetime.

Currently, the ADA funds 1.7 million dollars in grants to
researchers at the Texas Medical Center.

Programs available for diabetics in Houston and the surrounding counties include Project POWER, a grass roots effort based in local churches; Feria de la Salud, a community health fair aimed at the traditionally underserved Hispanic community; and CHASE, a new program targeted at children who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes.

The Houston ADA also runs a medically supervised summer camp for children with type 1 diabetes, and hosts a “sugar monitored” Halloween party for the youngsters.

To raise money for education, research and advocacy, the Houston ADA coordinates several fund raising events throughout the year, including America’s Walk for Diabetes, School Walk for Diabetes, the ADA Golf Classic and an annual Wine Auction and Gala.
