The President's Message

It's hard to believe that already a month has passed in 2006.  The board launched the year with a planning meeting Jan. 5 in the offices of American Diabetes Association, thanks to Ralston Creswell, CAE, our past president.  As a result, we agreed that this year HSAE will try to provide outstanding educational and networking opportunities at our luncheons, some of which will count toward hours that members need to sit for the CAE exam.  Some of our programs last year did that and if you need a statement of CPE hours earned during 2005, I urge you to email me at akelley@rwanational.org

Helping members deliver more value to their organizations is also a goal of HSAE.  One way we can do this is by sharing knowledge.  The CAE study group that is held at lunch most Mondays has been a tremendous source of sharing between organizations as we work together through sample tests and possible scenarios that face an executive of a large association.  Whether you want to sit for the test or not, you can learn through this process.  Our January luncheon also offered an outstanding way to share information as we we explored the eight SuperTrends affecting organizations.  It was an example of the lunch and learn opportunities we hope to offer this year, possibly at member facilities.

Another effort by our board is trying to find ways to cooperate with other affiliates such as Texas Society of Association Executives and the group formerly known as American Society of Association Executives.  You will hear more on these discussions as they progress.

Lastly, the board is looking for ways to generate revenue through our website and improve the efficiency of the organization.  We are thankful to Schipul-The Web Marketing Company for donating our website.  We hope to add credit card capabilities in the near future to reduce the administrative burden of invoicing for job listings and no shows on luncheons.

Of course, an association is only as strong as our members' involvement and their willingness to bring prospects and staff members to luncheons.  Please call me if you are willing to work on a committee.  We look forward to an active year of growth and development.

Sincerely,

Allison Kelly

HSAE President and

Executive Director

Romance Writers of America

Board members of the Houston Society of Association Executives take a break from their planning meeting.  They are (clockwise from left) Paula Ruth, APR, Paula Ruth & Company Public Relations; Andy Teas, Houston Apartment Association; Jo D. Miller, Institute of Real Estate Management,

2004 HSAE President Jay Hagins, CAE, Houston Advertising Federation; 2006 President Allison Kelley, Romance Writers of America; Jeff Tafel, CAE, International Facility Management Association, 2005 President J. Ralston Creswell, CAE, American Diabetes Association; Josena Arquieta, Woman Contractors Association; Vicky Aranda, Association Network; Toy Wood, CAE, Greater Houston Builders Association; Margery Reinheardt, Hilton Houston Post Oak Hotel, and Julie George, Loren R. Cook, P.C., Attorneys at Law.

Josena Arquieta Elected to Board

A new voice on the HSAE board this year is Josena Arquieta who has been executive director of the Women Contractors' Association since 2001. Josena also owns J.D. Metals, a scrap metal recycling company that she purchased in 1994.

In her career, Josena has also been the owner of an employee leasing company supplying insurance coverage and payroll and was the director of the third largest ALANON office in the United State, promoting ALANON and making it available to the community.  She has sold life insurance and been a private music instructor in piano and guitar.

Josena has been a board member of the National Association of Women Business Owners for eight years, president of Women Contractors Association, Chairman of the Accomplish Networking Group and has served on the Small Business Development Committee of the Port of Houston Authority.  She has also worked with Habitat for Humanity.

Tafel Leads Vigorous Discussion of Super Trends

At the HSAE January luncheon, Jeff Tafel, CAE, reviewed the eight super trends for associations that were identified at the Aug. 2005 national conference of ASAE, then moderated a discussion about what members are doing in each of the areas.  These trends included demassification in which members and prospects desire focused efforts to meet their needs.  Unbundling or offering products and services a la carte, rather than as a package, was another trend as was scrimping--members looking for greater returns on their investments in association membership.  The shift to information-based societies in which the competitive advantage lies in enriching professional development, learning, connectivity and life itself through knowledge was Wave 3.1, the fourth trend.

The fifth trend is virtualization which notes the strain of personal relationships as web-based "virtual" experiences become a form of fellowship and community building.  Next is "Cyber-Mobbing" and the need for associations to develop a multi-pronged, web-savvy approach to advocacy.  Along with this comes greater scrutiny from legislators and regulators of association activities, so that associations must operate with greater transparency, particularly in governance, advocacy and political activity.  Finally, large global associations face "Counter-Americanism"  which must lead associations to develop localized models of association culture, governance, politics and operations.

Jeff's handouts should prove useful for any association planning efforts.

Use the HSAE Job Bank

Already this year, four jobs have been posted in the HSAE job bank.  For member postings, we also send out a newsletter alerting the membership that a job has been posted.  However, you may want to check the job bank more frequently if you are in the market.  A posting is $50 for one month of website exposure.  Remember to use the HSAE job bank when you are looking for staff.

CAE Study Group Resumes Feb. 27

By Jeff Tafel, CAE

Preparation for the CAE study course will pick up again on Feb. 27.  The group has been meeting most Mondays and also has a listserve offered through International Facilitiy Management Association.  Participating in the group does not mean you have to take the test.  To join us, contact me at jeff.tafel@ifma.org .

Try this question.

The answer will be given at the luncheon on Feb. 24.

Q. The National Association of Wine Drinkers (NAWD) hosted a cocktail reception at a hotel in conjunction with its summer meeting.  Chief Wine-O became intoxicated at the reception and hit another car on his drive home.  The injured driver sued the NAWD, the hotel and the Chief.  What protections will not help the NAWD in this situation?

A. Indemnification in place with the hotel

B. Insurance to cover liquor claims

C. Libel insurance

D. A strict NAWD board policy that board members will not consume more than two drinks at association functions.

Luncheon Speaker David Dollinger, First   Step Training & Consulting/Computer Services, entertained us with tips to make our computing lives easier.  The handout was easily worth the luncheon price in shortcuts and free downloads.

Ralston Creswell, CAE (right), 2005 President of HSAE, surprised 2004 President Jay Hagins, CAE with a gift certificate to Cafe Express for winning the naming contest for this newsletter.  Jay submitted a number of excellent ideas, along with several other members, and the board voted on the anonymous entries.  Jay's Association Insight was the winner.
